We Are The Church: You Are The Church

Overview

The true essence of a church goes beyond its physical building; it resides within its people. When individuals within the church understand their identities and firmly grasp their beliefs, they unlock the potential for remarkable collective achievements. The upcoming series, "We Are the Church," is introduced as an exploration of the shared identity of the congregation and an examination of how, when united, they possess the power to bring about transformative change within their communities and beyond.

Matthew 5:13 NIV

“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

Discuss

  1. When you think of a “salty” Christian, what comes to mind?

    • Consider this (context): In ancient times, salt was regarded as “white gold” as its value was so immense. Salt provided a means of flavoring and preserving food, it could be used as an antiseptic, and salt from the Dead Sea to this day is used for medical and cosmetic purposes.

    • With this context in mind, what do you think Jesus meant by we are the salt of the earth?

  2. What does it mean for salt to lose its saltiness?

    • Consider this (context): Salt (or sodium chloride) is an incredibly stable chemical substance. This means that it is extremely unlikely to lose its potency without some outside influence. When salt becomes diluted (specifically by water) its chemical bonds weaken making it lose its “saltiness”

    • We lose our “saltiness” or our value as Christ's followers when the Gospel and its influence on our lives becomes diluted.

  3. What are some things that dilute the influence and impact of the Gospel in your life?

  4. How does this context highlight the severity of Jesus’ warning at the end of verse 13?

  5. Salt is indicative of the physical needs that Christ's followers are responsible for meeting. What are some practical ways we can “season” people’s lives so they can glimpse the goodness of God?

  6. “We Are The Church” is a challenging statement to live by when so many of our peers, and maybe many of us, have experienced tremendous pain from the church. What are some ways we can be a source of healing in the lives of those around us?
