Jesus Over Everything: Success
Overview
Today’s culture often measures success by wealth, status, career accomplishments, or influence. Social media highlights the lives of people who seem to have "made it," and society tells us that more possessions, promotions, or fame lead to happiness. However, Jesus offers a counter-cultural view on success. In Mark 8:36-37, He poses a powerful question: What benefit is there to gain everything the world offers if, in the process, you lose your soul? Jesus challenges us to reconsider what we are striving for.
True success, according to the Bible, is not about fame or fortune but about faithfully following God. For instance, someone might be a CEO, achieve financial prosperity, or gain widespread recognition—but if they neglect their relationship with God, that success is ultimately empty. On the other hand, a person who lives humbly, serves others, and seeks God’s will may not receive worldly accolades but is truly successful in the eyes of God.
Consider the story of the rich young ruler, who we referenced in our last Table Talk, Jesus Over Money, (Matthew 19:16-22), who had everything by worldly standards but could not give up his wealth to follow Jesus. His attachment to material success kept him from eternal life. In contrast, the Apostle Paul, who endured hardship, imprisonment, and suffering, said in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Paul’s success was defined by his faithfulness to God, not by worldly accomplishments.
This discussion will help us redefine success by focusing on spiritual growth, serving others, and honoring God above all else.
