Summer in the Psalms: Psalm 1
Psalm 1:1-6 ESV
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
READ THROUGH AS A GROUP: What are some of your initial feelings in response to this chapter? (Is it hard to digest? Is it black and white? Does it feel unrelatable? etc.)
What are some things you find delight in?
Do you struggle to relate to find delight in either of these categories? (Company of the wicked, law of the Lord)
What are some of the differences you notice when one of these categories is more prominent in your day to day?
“Streams of water” is indicative of movement and the “rhythms of life”. How do we maintain a consistent interaction with God and His word despite the noise that surrounds our daily lives?
The end of verse 3 tells us that “whatever they do prospers”: Is prosperity an outcome or a motivation for meditation? What motivations do you have to get into God’s presence?
Is there ever a time to walk with the wicked?
