Vessels: Mentorship (Pt.2)

Being Mentored

Hello! Greet the people at your table, ask them about their week, and make introductions so everyone knows each other.

Overview

It can be easy to identify areas of our life where we need some guidance, but do we always feel capable of leading and mentoring others? Tonight, let’s talk about how we can get past our own roadblocks in order to mentor others who need it. Specifically, we’re going to be looking at where Elijah and Elisha’s relationship began, and all of the challenges that Elijah had to wrestle with before taking Elisha on.

PRAY

Questions

  1. What’s the one word you WANT to be known for?  Here are some ideas:  “Virtuous, Prayerful, Intentional, Generous, Righteous, Loving...”

  2. “When you embrace mentorship you elevate as a leader”.  What are some things taught by a mentor that has elevated you? How have your mentors impacted the legacy you wanted to be known for?

  3. Among the many things God was using Elijah for, how do you think Elijah found the time and energy to mentor Elisha? What are some roadblocks in our journey that hinder us from mentoring?

  4. God did mighty works through Elijah: sending fire from heaven, sustaining Elijah in a drought, and feeding him using the ravens. But if you know Elijah, you know that he went through mind games. 1 Kings 19 shows him crying out to God in a cave, asking to die.

    • What are some of the mind games that can happen that make you feel disqualified for mentorship?

    • How can your weaknesses better qualify you for mentorship?

      • 1 Corinthians 12:9 - But he said to me, “my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

  5. What are some things that you needed from a mentor that you could offer to those you are mentoring?

  6. How can we be missional in what our mentorship provides compared to the mentorship the world can provide?

  7. How can the Holy Spirit play a role in your mentorship?

  8. Who is someone you can mentor in this season of your life?

Closing Prayer / Practice

  • Pray against the roadblocks that keep you from mentoring others.

  • Pray for the wisdom to find the right people to mentor and that God would give us the wisdom to direct them in His ways.
